Younes Baba-ali born in Oujda (Ma) in 1986 lives and works in Casablanca.
Younes Baba-Ali is a multi-disciplinary artist and self-taught musician. Since graduating from L’Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Strasbourg in 2008, sound material and its conditioning are central elements of his artistic work. His pieces aim to involve the viewers in the artistic process, asserting that without them, the piece cannot exist. It is a way of encouraging the viewers to become more than just visitors. They are questioned on the rights they have in relation to the pieces and are discouraged from the usual viewing habits. He experiments with the capacity sound has to propagate in space and to involve the body of the viewer in the creation process. He also allows to integrate into the works a feeling of report integrated into the process of creation.

Younes BABA-ALI fait partie de cette jeune génération d’artistes nomades et pluridisciplinaires qui construisent une oeuvre au croisement des territoires, des médias et des identités. Sa double appartenance culturelle (originaire de Oujda au Maroc, il fait ses études en France), lui donne une ouverture sensible aux enjeux de notre société. Il les met en oeuvre sur un mode sonore, musical pourrait-on dire, au sein d’installations toujours déroutantes, car laissant une place à l’interprétation poétique. Objets électriques désuets se mettant en marche à contretemps, portes d’armoires industrielles métalliques s’ouvrant doucement en grinçant, suggérant une présence mystérieuse ou inquiétante, mégaphones produisant du morse en lieu et place d’appels à la prière, tels sont les modes d’intervention de ce jeune artiste. Si le travail de Younes Baba-Ali est marqué par la diversité voire la divergence des formes, il s’agit toujours, pour lui, de se situer au point d’équilibre entre une volonté esthétique et l’urgence de messages à transmettre.

An
eye in the West, and another across the Gibraltar Strait. The migrant
vision of the Moroccan artist Younes Baba-Ali (Oujda, 1986) stars in his
upcoming exhibition 'Desencuentro(s)' (Unecounters) in Sabrina Amrani
Art Gallery (Madera, 23. Madrid). The exhibition reflects on the process
of migration, but also on the hypermodern man's anonymity increasingly
away from the idea of community.
Audio, video, installations,
drawings and even objects that have had their own migration to Europe
make this proposal of blithe spirit, with which Sabrina Amrani continues
her approach to the art that is emerging in North Africa and Middle
East.
Baba-Ali says that without the
interaction of the spectators, many of his pieces are meaningless.
Therefore, he calls to 'live' the unencounter(s) of his work,
transporting the visitor to the sensations produced by the return home
of an immigrant or a call to prayer in one of the most universal
language, morse code.
